SIGOURNEY - Grapes, sweet corn and pheasants. Is that a menu or a unique farm experiment?
The answer is yes.
Brothers Jeff and Greg Kuntz of rural Sigourney have been experimenting with the integration of grapes, sweet corn and pheasants on a pheasant hunting preserve owned by their father, Bill Kuntz.
The Kuntz family's operation is believed to be the only one of its kind in Iowa.
The grapes and corn are raised without pesticides because the pheasants eat all the bugs off the plants growing in their pen. Netting over the pen keeps the deer and raccoons out.
Eventually, the Kuntzes harvest those three food items and sell them.
