If you are someone who loves to take a trip down to Texas for a little Turkey hunting, your plans might be spoilt. Turkey populations in East Texas are struggling. This has led to calls for there to be a cancellation of the Turkey hunting season in more than half of Texas.

The recommendation will affect numerous counties where previously there has been a limited season for an eastern subspecies of wild turkey. If the Texas Parks and Wildlife commission, a nine-member group, approves the recommendation – the restriction will be in force from September 1, 2015.

The biggest disappointment will be from wildlife managers. They have tried for a number of decades to establish the popular hunting bird into its former range. Many of these attempts have been unsuccessful.

The reintroduction of turkeys has been in cooperation with the US Forest Service since the late 1970s, as well as with other government agencies, universities, landowners and the National Wild Turkey Federation. Over the last forty years, they have been conducting reintroduction programs; approximately 10,000 wild eastern turkeys have been stocked in the state. Many of these were trapped from other states, transported to Texas and released in 10 million acres in the eastern third of the state.

The bird originally became extinct in the state due to over-hunting and habitat loss during the 1940s. One of the biggest problems for turkeys is that they often congregate at roadsides or together in fields. This makes them easy targets.

However, since their loss in the state there have been several programs to reduce the impact of hunting and to help with the conservation of natural habitat of the birds. With the farm bill passed last year, future reintroductions might be more successful.

The final decision for the recommendation will be made on March 26.

Will the decision impact your hunting plans? What is your solution for the turkey reintroduction program?
