The weather in the Dakotas is not being too kind to pheasant hunters this year. In South Dakota there were strong winds followed by really hot days. In North Dakota, there were conditions which weren’t that favorable.
The first day of the pheasant hunting season was hot. One hunter commented that on the opening day, he found himself among six Ohio hunters in lightweight summer T-shirts that were still soaked with sweat. The sweat wasn’t from working the fields in the search of ring neck roosters.
Temperatures on the day were 85 degrees. Some hunters have suggested this is the best temperature if you wanted to be relaxing on the beach, but not if you wanted to be in the bush trying to flush out your favorite quarry.
Even when hunting in the reported ‘honey hold’ of the wild Dakotan pheasants, the weather conditions meant that hunters were sometimes put off from getting the best harvests. Some have stated that there was some very spotty bird hunting action.
The second day wasn’t much better according to the hunters. The weather was almost steamy, with temperatures similar to those that you would expect in the middle of summer. For groups who had prepared for their hunting trips by packing long johns, heavy briar-busting pants and winter sweaters – the temperature was almost unbearable.
The day therefore ended with similar results, only a few birds were shot.
The third day had a change. The weather was decidedly colder with temperatures dropping and winds picking up to near 50 mph. This made hunting conditions difficult. Flushing birds were picked up by the wind and sped off like they were launched and shouts from nearby friends were not heard.
If the weather was not enough to contend with, on day four, North Dakota seemed to throw another challenge to some hunters: a group of moose. Again the day resulted in a poor hunting trip.
Next year, some hunters are claiming that they won’t be looking at the opening weekend, but rather consider hunting later on in the season.
Did the weather hamper your season opener? What were your results?
