It took only minutes for the Winnebago County Board to shoot down a public deer hunting plan, some have spent months putting together.

Committee members suddenly decided not to pursue the controversial issue. Committee members have talked about including a public bow and arrow hunt in the county's efforts to reduce the deer population in forest preserves along the Kishwaukee River.

Last winter only sharpshooters were used. But the newly appointed Winnebago County Board Chairman Scott Christiansen, who's running for the job this fall, has said he's opposed to changing the program.

Hunters say a bow and arrow program has worked elsewhere, and they'd even pay to help thin the deer herds, saving the county money. They promise the issue isn't dead yet.
